At this point in the pandemic, everyone’s had at least one COVID birthday. We’ve all been through varying degrees of feeling lonely. And we’ve grown very accustomed to Zoom framing. I wanted to play those notes roughly, in a way that might be funny but is almost certainly depressing. Rough chuckles as a friend calls them.

Here are 101 of the pictures I took in this misstep of a year.

Like most ideas, I found this one roaming the vast and unpredictable terrain that exists between 5am and being officially awake.

I first saw James Gouldthorpe’s work at the Fourth Wall Gallery in Oakland, where he was showing “Worrisome: Short Stories.” His wide-ranging influences (comics, movies, novels, music, and occasionally painters) result in works that are rich with narrative… it’s just that the stories are obscured.

My dad coached soccer when I was a kid. He was really good at it and spent a lot of time working at it. I think he started assisting on my sister’s team, then started coaching my team. Eventually he went back to coaching girls soccer, because it was a lot more fun than coaching boys.

Sung Kim builds instruments. They’re imaginative, oddly intuitive, and often gorgeous.
