I haven’t posted here in quite a while, obviously, mostly because I’ve been insanely busy. Looks like things will start to lighten up in March, and I’ll be posting the slew of projects that I’m finishing up sometime around then.

I’ve been watching a lot of Maddin’s films lately, and I get more and more pissed off with everyone. It seems like every time I have an idea that I’m just starting to nurture, I’ll invariably see one of Guy’s films for 10 years ago that’s already trod that ground and trod it well. I actually had to stop watching My Winnipeg earlier this week because of a film I’m working on now.

While his choppy editing and highly stylized visuals can be very off-putting at first, once you get over the frustration they become surprisingly easy to follow and enjoy. His most recent short film, Night Mayor, is extremely accessible:

Maddin is very fond of melodrama, so this seems like a no-brainer to me.

Nice thing about a band that wears the same uniforms all the time is that you can film several shows over the course of a year and have them look the same (although they did all get new patches in between 2 of these shows). It’s like the poor man’s multi-camera shoot.

I toyed with editing this to the version of the song off of the record, but I prefer the slightly inferior-sounding live recording. While I like the clean studio sound, it makes it look like they’re lip-syncing. Plus doing it this way meant one take was already perfectly synced with the audio.

Here is a 20 minute film of someone making typewriter noises. No, really. And it’s enjoyable all teh way through.
